This whole series is amazing. This is the one book in the series I couldn't get from the library so I bought it.. My kid is 3rd grade but reading at 11th grade. He thinks these are the best books ever for history. They are pretty fair too, not sugarcoating the english invasion but instead telling you why and how it all went down. If you like this, also check out the "Unsolved Mysteries from History" series. We are secular homeschoolers and these two series are Social Studies gold.
Reads like a not so subtle white propagandist book for children. It distorts the Jamestown story making it lopsided with overly violent Algonquins. I am always looking for social studies books for my students. This book is the most culturally insensitive book I have ever purchased. The main themes about that the Algonquins were petty, like baubles, and easily insighted to murder. There are many pictures of violent natives and put downs, making it seem like any native violence was unjustified or an over-reaction. While the book does have some negatives about whites’ behavior toward the Algonquins, it is more subtle. You have to read to find it and even then it is told in a very bland way. Not so for the Algonquins. For the natives, most of the pictures tell unflattering stories. On page 26, under the heading: Why are the Algonquins Angry? You learn that 1) because settlements are well protected and fenced off 2) Algonquins see their lands fenced in and are told they cannot enter 3) In 1622, friendly Algonquins are invited to breakfast and suddenly they take their hosts tools and attack. Above the heading is “Algonquins massacre colonists†“If a tribe is hostile, its village is destroyed, so it’s safer for tribes to seem friendly.†Another caption, under a picture of violent Algonquins , one is about to hit a white man with a sharp instrument, reads, “In Ruins: People are killed in their homes and in the fields. The colonists’ houses are burned to the ground. The natives are made to look like they killed colonists because they were not allowed in fenced yards! On page 28, “People no longer fear living outside the fort. Now it is the Algonquins who are afraid.†WTH?In the beginning of the book there is one small picture of an angry white man with fire behind him. This is the ONLY picture of whites being violent to the natives and you cannot even tell! You have to read to find out what they did. But of course it is an Algonquin who starts the violence by stealing a settler’s cup. Its caption reads:â€...the hotheaded leaders of the first trip destroy the natives’ village and burn all their crops.†There is no mention of a massacre or the natives’ village and crops being burned. This book is very one-sided and has no business being in a classroom.
Great insight into what life was like as an American Colonists. The font is silly and the illustrations are eye catching. Social Studies teacher in my school used this book to enhance her Social Studies lessons.
Kids love the facts and this is an engaging group of books. Illustrations are very funny and well-tied to text. Arrived in 2 days.
My 8 year old daughter was having a hard time conceptualizing life in the colonies from some of her history books. This helped in a very funny and entertaining way!
A fun read for the students to learn about the "fun" facts of this point in history.
Fun and entertaining way to learn some history facts..
good book for kids
