The insights into how to actually analyze and play Shakespeare's characters is delivered in an amazingly detailed yet practical way. Walker's personal experiences with the many roles she has played on stage is compelling from the first page to the last. She details easily how the words Shakespeare wrote guide the interpretation in even some of his most difficult lines and characters. Studying the entire text, utilizing the meter and other clues to narrow down what it is that drives the character and how to understand their relationships to others within the play are the key to bringing the actor, reader and audiance to a fuller understanding of Shakespeare's works. This is especially important for the modern ear and modern mindset. We find through her research with psychologists that Shakespeare's understanding of the human experience was on target. Her understanding of the strictures of the time in which Shakespeare wrote; boys playing women, the politics of church and state, the generally accepted relationships of men and women in society at the time and so on, also gives her fuel to color the characters more fully and life like. She gives us a treasure trove of experience and tools to enhance our understanding of Shakespeare's characters who have withstood the test of 400 years on stage.
This book presents thoughts about Shakespeare, and playing Shakespeare, by a top tier Shakespearean actor. Harriet Walter may not be a household name in the U.S., but in classical acting circles she is deservedly famous -- a major Shakespearean actor, a Dame of the British Empire, and recently the star in three major male Shakespearean roles. I was fortunate enough to see her as Brutus in Julius Caesar and as Henry IV, so as soon as I became aware of this book, I rushed to read it. It is very interesting, and makes a strong contrast to most Shakespeare criticism, which tends to view the plays more as literature than as actual plays that are put on in theaters by hardworking actors. Ms. Walter's key focus is in getting into the skin of her character by figuring out what motivates the character. It's interesting to read about how this works in practice, particularly when other actors and directors are also developing their own interpretations. And Ms. Walter is very strong on the relationships between characters, interpreting (for example) the Merchant as a love triangle between two men and a woman. Reading the book makes me anxious to see Ms. Walter in action again!
My daughter and I purchased this book just after getting tickets to go see Ms. Walter perform The Tempest in Brooklyn (thanks to learning about it in a NY Times article written 3 weeks ahead of the performance). The book is great, but it pales in comparison to seeing Ms. Walter perform the roles about which she is writing. Get this book and read it, but better yet, GO SEE MS. WALTER. We drove from NC to Brooklyn in a snowstorm and dealt with long walks through deep, icy slush in single digit wind chills to see her at St. Ann's Warehouse, and we'd do it again, any day, without a moment's hesitation. She's an artist of the highest caliber, and her Prospero left a mark on me.
arrived ahead of time - wonderful book
Dame Harriet is one of *the* Shakespearean actors of this or any generation. This book collects her thoughts on Shakespeare's heroines -- contemporaneous with when she was preparing for a role and looking back on what she learned playing it. Walter has spent the last decade playing lead roles in a trilogy of all-female productions directed by Phyllida Lloyd (I've had the good fortune to see all three, two live and one on film), so this book includes chapters on Brutus, Prospero, and Henry IV. This is an excellent read for any student of Shakespeare, offering tremendous insights from a master actor.
