I chose a whopping 5 star rating for this book because I feel like this could help out so many other teens like me that are going through problems, but not only teens, this book could help anyone, really. I recommended this book to so of my adult friends (mom and dad friends) and they really seemed to like it, and I could really tell they are using what they learned in this book because they just seem more... well, happy! They seem to have a better grip on life and emotions. I truly recommend this book to anyone. Eighty years old but still having trouble in life? It's never too late to pick up this book! Maybe you are ten and wish you could escape from the real world but also get your life ready for whatever may happen? I can almost guarantee that this book is that you are looking for! As for some people that don't like to read but want a better life.. like the eighty and ten year olds, I suggest you read this book. Or since this is the 21st century, have a bot or something read this to you. As for the author of this book... thank you. Thank you for helping my grasp on life, my sight to beauty, my entire mindset, and my interactions to people of all types. Though the chance you read my comment is most likely one to many, I still thank you. And thank you to everyone who helped write and or make this book, your efforts will not be forgotten.

This is actually a funny story... I ordered this book because for some crazy reason the hardback was at a lower price than the paperback. So I was like, "SCORE!" then when the book arrived and it was only two inches tall, *facepalm* however, my teenager loved it! And still, gives me crap out not properly reading the description before purchasing the item!

This book was referred to me by the Asperger Experts. My son has aspergers. He is highly intelligent and a sweet soul, but I needed something to help him to understand what makes a person effective/successful in life. As he matures and as he heads off to high school very soon, this book will be so very helpful to him. I feel it is a wonderful resource for parents and teachers to share with all teens. The world is big and coming at them so fast. Lets equip them in every way that we can. There is a workbook that you can purchase also. My son will be working through this (this year) as he starts the 8th grade. Thank you Sean Covey!

The general ideas and concepts are only a positive addition to you or your teens life. We started reading this to our kids at 8 and 9 years old and having a general discussion on habits and behaviors discussed in the book. I share this book with whomever as a great starting point for teens trying to develop an active action plan based on what they want and are interested in, as well as assisting them in reflecting on what it is that they want and what do their current behaviors show that they really want. Great starting point. If your teen is not a reader or a little hesitant, get creative. Read a chapter a night or every few days as a family and discuss it. Be consistent with it, they will open up if you remain quiet and allow them to really think for themselves and freely share their thoughts with you as they try to figure out the life that they want to live for themselves.

My 15 year old daughter asked for this book for her birthday after studying it in one of her classes at school. I love giving a book at birthday and holiday and this one was worth every penny. She loves this book and reads it often. This is a must give book to your child of they have a personality that loves organization, leadership, social situations, business, and communication. She often references something she has read in the book with is. I very pleased.

Bought for my 14yo daughter but, my 12 year old son can't wait until he gets to read it too. Author speaks directly to teens and my son was hooked after I read him just a sample. Both kids aren't done reading the book yet so i can't say how effective it is but the fact that they both want to read it says alot about how well the author does in connecting with the younger generation.

My children (13 year old twins) have really enjoyed this book. Sean does a great job of making the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People relevant to teenagers. The books is not a marginally revised version of the original; it is a complete rewrite with entirely different examples and many different quotes.

Bought this for my HS students as an alternative read. They love it! I think I will buy a classroom set and use it as a part of my curriculum next year!

Teen love and real world drama collide in this fantastic YA coming of age story.Maya is a high school senior with a passion for film-making, trying to convince her over protective parents to let her go to New York University for film rather than go to college closer to home. She's also trying to manage her crush on the popular football star, who gets brought into her life through a school project. Their friendship grows into something more, and it seems everything is going to work out great for her.Then a terrorist attack in their state brings harsh scrutiny to Muslims across the US, and to Maya's family in particular due to their being the only Brown people in the small town, and an unfortunate coincidence that links them to the suspect. Maya struggles with her parents' fears for her safety and the aftermath of the event making things weird with her crush. She must also face a classmate with a grudge against all Muslims who becomes radicalized by the attack...On a slightly spoiler-y note, I like how the attack is handled. [Spoiler: the Muslim American initially believed to have conducted the attack was actually an innocent victim and a white supremacist was the terrorist responsible.] This is much more in line with actual terrorist incidents in the US, and reminded me of the Oklahoma City bombing which was initially blamed on Muslim terrorists before white supremacist Timothy McVeigh was identified. The classmate who attacks Maya because his older brother became an amputee in Iraq was also on point. The book reflects an American experience where Brown, Muslim, immigrant and other minority groups are always suspect even when white supremacy is the true culprit.The heavy issues aren't as central as the coming of age and love story, however, and it all comes out so beautifully. I will be on the lookout for anything else Samira Ahmed publishes.

I really enjoyed this book, it has a good story, easy to read and I liked the writing style. The characters were likeable and relatable, and the subject thought provoking. It felt like true story, something happening anywhere and everywhere in the world today. I also liked the way Maya sees the world as through a movie reel, capturing every memory as a film image.Read and review free copy.

Quick engaging read with a lot of heart. This book sucked me right in as I followed Maya's heartbreaking and inspiring struggle to claim her own identity as Muslim American. Full of pop culture references, beautiful descriptions and an authentic portrayal of an Indian American family, Ahmed captures the feelings that are universal about being a teenager while weaving a unique story.

I sort of wish this book had started at the last chapter and told that story going forward, weaving in the events of the rest of the book as backstory. It was good, but not quite as tight as it could have been.

I bought this to read for my book club. I found it a little too teen-romance; but it was a nice little read.

The romance was pretty cheesy but it had a great message and I enjoyed the read.

Ahmed’s book is such an incredible, devastating, heartwarming, hopeful story and I am so glad I read it. I highly recommend picking up LH&OF for a read that will sweep you through page-by-page and devour your heart.

Thoughtfully put together - a great example of walking in another’s shoes - should be on every high schooler‘s reading list - also gives a glimpse of why we should be doing more to help the physically and emotionally abused living amoung us....

The Emerald Mile is nominally about the fastest run ever successfully completed down the Colorado River / Grand Canyon - 36 hours and some change, but in reality, it's so much more. I was expecting a short, light read - a little good fun. Instead what I got was a truly epic tale, not just about the run, but about the entire history of the river, from 1540 to the present. The book feels like an interesting cross between the writings of Marc Reisner (Cadillac Desert), and John Krakauer (In to Thin Air). It's a bit of a brick, and there were a few parts where the author waxed poetic for awhile, but it was all in all exceptionally well written.Like Krakauer, Fedarko describes the action and surroundings in a way that makes you feel like you are in the boat, feeling the water, and seeing the amazing natural terrain. And like Reisner, Fedarko infuses the story with fabulous back stories of all the major players, so that you really feel the full force of the personalities which drive the two stories, which in the end were one.The protagonist in this book is the late and heavy snowpack of 1983, and the great melt that followed. Not only did it set the stage for the record run, but it caught the Bureau of Reclamation totally flat footed, threatening the Glen Canyon dam. They had spent 20 years filling Lake Powell, only to see a volume of water that could have filled half the lake in just one year. The damage it caused to the Glen Canyon Dam was unexpected and unprecedented. But the benefit to the river runners was also equally unprecedented. And for that you will need to read this book.One of the most interesting and amusing parts of the book is at the end- an interview with the author. Guaranteed to surprise you. And the pics at the end are fabulous, as are the fun tidbits in the bibliography. It's one reason the book is not quite as long as it initially appeared to be.

This is so much more than the story of the Emerald Mile's speed run atop Grand Canyon floodwaters. It's about the crew at Glen Canyon Dam trying to mitigate damage and keep the waters under control. It's about the people who were affected by the high flows, both boatmen and passengers. It's about three men who did the impossible, just to prove it could be done.I found this utterly fascinating, and enjoyed comparing it with similar Grand Canyon history books. It's interesting how everyone has a slightly different view of things, and the characters in the Big Ditch. For example, Georgie White is either a heroine or an outlaw, depending on who is telling the story at the time, and sometimes both. However, she'll always be remembered for her comment after wrecking at Crystal Rapid with her unsinkable boat during the flood. The behemoth came apart and scattered equipment and passengers seven ways to Sunday. Georgie was found, shaken but alive, and when Scott Thybony asked her what happened, her reply was "I told 'em to hang on. But they just don't make passengers the way they used to."They don't make Grand Canyon adventures the way they used to, either. With the National Parks Service banning everything they can, there won't be many more of these incredible tales to share around the campfires.I especially liked the story about the evolution of the McKenzie river driftboat into the Grand Canyon dory that runs the whitewater with elegance and grace, and the fragility of a soap bubble.Great for the armchair adventurer, or for the folks who are working the river.

I'm in charge of river ops for a dam system in the Bureau of Reclamation. When a friend's father handed me this book, I expected to hate it but I also wanted to understand some of what went into the operations I could review from 1983. This turned out to be a beautiful, balanced, thoughtful book. There's no right or wrong answer. There aren't any faceless demons. Fedarko treats both sides of the engineering/environment divide with compassion and draws such strong character portraits that you find yourself rooting for both.

I have read "a few" books on the Grand Canyon over the decades, and this one is at the very top of the list. It's hard to tell you how much I enjoyed every word. Don't know if I am biased because I love rowing wooden boats through The Canyon, but I would hope my appreciation for amazing writing talent trumps that. The enjoyment I have experienced from this extremely well crafted work of art is off the charts! Wow!We as a family often read books aloud to each other. When we were doing this with "Emerald Mile", we found that we had to pause often and just absorb and relish in the incredible magic of the words that had just transpired. Descriptions of "floating mandolins" in tune with "the harmonics of the river" and on and on....just pure delight to visualize! I love the description of the feeling of the connection of a wooden boat with water....things that an author could only know from years of being with and dreaming about the boats.You don't have to be a river person to enjoy this work, as the words flow just as beautifully as a river itself. Not the novelist or jazz musician of days past, soaking up booze in dim bars, Mr. Lebovitz is a chef, cookbook author and food blogger, soaking up the smells and tastes of the new, multi-cultural Paris.Classic French food is in decline now, as anyone who reads the food press knows, and I lament its loss. When I got this book I thought it would be about how (if) the "French" food of Paris is changing to absorb new ideas from its multi-cultural population within a classic framework.Instead, this book celebrates a different change. Mr. Lebovitz is now incorporating North African and other French colonial foods into his cooking repertoire as he lives and shops in a Paris where international food has supplanted "French" food thanks to decades of population mobility.This is old news. I remember searching out couscous in Paris in 1991. My life is already multicultural and I cook food like this all the time, so the recipes are ho-hum and the book holds little appeal for me.It is nice, though, to find a recipe for harissa from someone I think I can trust.I received an advance review copy of My Paris Kitchen by David Lebovitz (Ten Speed Press) through NetGalley.com.

Unlike many other reviewers, I had never heard of David Lebovitz or his food blog. I simply stumbled onto this book and decided to order it. Mr. Lebovitz is a good writer and his anecdotal stores about living in France add to the charm of this book. The truth is that this book would be rated 5 stars based just on its merit as a cook book alone. In the two weeks I've had it I've made 6 of the recipes, all of which were incredible, and my family loved.

I have started a project where I am cooking every recipe from this book and I must say I am close to 15% done and each and every recipe I have made (with the exception of Sardine Spread) has come out spectacular. The writing and story of each recipe is very informative and interesting and the recipes which range from novice to expert are laid out in a very coherent way. Just a joy to cook from this book and with a little investigating you can find my blog on wordpress. Great cookbook and I highly recommend it.

I first acquired this book in its Kindle format and started reading it on my iPad, relishing both the delicious recipes and the anecdotes and reflections on life in Paris. It soon became apparent that I desired to have this book in hard copy to be able to appreciate the photos and to physically feel it in my hands. This is a wonderful book which I cannot recommend highly enough if you want to learn about living and cooking in Paris and how we might recreate these recipes at home. I love David Leibovitz’s writing style and his dry and self deprecating sense of humor.

Cooking with a master (American) chef in Paris is part memoir and part cookbook. I have been told I'm a good cook, but some of these recipes intimidate me (and even the author the first few times he made them). There are others that I definitely will try! This is an enjoyable read with practical cooking lessons.

I bought this book for a friend who is a fan of David Lebovitz. (I am one now, myself.) She had been hooked by his food blog, read some interviews, and really wanted this book, which was a little beyond her budget at that moment. Perfect for a gift....and having bought the book, I naturally sat down to look through it, myself. David Lebovitz is one of those writers whose recipes and commentary are not only informative, but enjoyable. There are enough personal anecdotes mixed in with the instructions to make this a good book even for someone who believes that shoving a package of frozen dinner into a microwave counts as 'cooking'. (...they end up trying some of the recipes.)The text is excellent, both for clarity and for design, the photos are very good, and the food contemplated is delicious. One down-side of this book is that it is a little large to keep by the stove (and if you do keep it there, you might want to cover the pages with something clear to protect them.Definitely five stars, for me.

Everything David writes is a favorite of mine. I laugh, I cry, and most of all I love. I've ordered/pre-ordered everything he has ever written and never been disappointed. My favorite author! :) My Paris Kitchen is filled with delicious recipes + stories from David about his life in Paris and so much more. This book is definitely my go-to book for what pot or pan to cook with, pantry necessities, and kitchen tips from an expert.

I've made the caramel ribs, chicken lady chicken, gnochhi, and mash potatoes so far. Everything exceeded my expectations. The kind of food for weekend dinners or when friends are over. Cannot wait to try more recipes. Thank you for putting together this book and sharing your point of view. Your care and passion for French food and culture is obvious! I plan on gifting this to friends.

I absolutely love this cookbook. I was born and raised in Paris and David Lebovitz captures the charm of the city and its culinary delights (and it's foreign influences) so perfectly. I bought it for my mom in hardcover and I bought myself the kindle version (I move a lot!) and the hard cover really is a treasure to have out in the home.

I attend a Quaker meeting and have wanted an accessible, scholarly explanation of the different varieties of Quaker faith and practice. This book describes the major varieties of Quakerism in the U.S., how they evolved and how their present differences relate to the few core principles that date back to George Fox and the other founders.

This book answered a lot of questions for me. Well-written and documented, Thomas Hamm, a life-long Quaker, explores many types of Meetings and many ways to the Quaker experience. This is a good book for a novice to read, as well as giving deeper understanding to those who feel that Quakers are of a particular mould, or that, perhaps,even, that they no longer exist.

It is important to realize that The Quakers in America by Tom Hamm is part of a series on religions in America, and isn't about all Quakers everywhere. It can be easy for non-Quakers in the U.S. to assume that it is a predominantly American religion. However, this is not the case, and therefore to get a true understanding of who Quakers are, it would be more prudent to read something from outside this series. Therefore, considering the confines of the topic, Hamm commendably realizes the necessity of starting the history with the beginning, even though the founder of Quakerism, George Fox, was an British. In fact, Hamm does a thorough job of exploring everything a person would want to know about American Quakers. He takes special care to explore the diversity of the sects and divisions among Quakers based on differing beliefs and practices. He explains these tendencies both currently and throughout American history. Also in American history, Hamm explores the various ways Quakers both were influential and were influenced. The Quakers were heavily involved in the history of Pennsylvania, in abolitionism, in women's movements, and several key figures in American history were Quakers, such as Alice Paul, Herbert Hoover and Richard Nixon. Most of the book, however, focuses not on Quakers in the spotlight, but on the lives of more typical Quakers. In this way, Hamm invites the reader into the world of being Quaker in America. He has essentially created a guidebook for what one will find upon voyaging into the meetinghouses and listening to discussions of the internal politics or participating in the practices. Essentially, what this book is perfect for is finding out more about the pacifist users of consensus who value silence, who may or may not be Christian, who believe that God speaks through everyone, and are your neighbors.

The Quakers in America, by Thomas Hamm, gives a detailed look at the current state of affairs of Quakers in the United States. The book gives a brief history of the Quaker tradition, then goes on to touch on a variety of topics relevant to Friends today, from the American Friends Service Committee to political tendencies to homosexuality, looking at the different viewpoints expressed by various groups of Friends. The focus is on the diversity of Quaker thought and tradition in America today, stressing the idea that Quakers cannot be lumped together under any single heading or even set of beliefs. The book is very representative of all different types of Friends and aspects of the Quaker tradition, but is too specific for someone who does not have a general understanding of Quakerism to benefit from. The Quakers in America is too focused and does not provide enough background knowledge to be of much use to someone who does not already have a fundamental grasp of the Quaker tradition. The history of the religion is covered quickly, as are the basic tenets of Quakerism. The book gives only the briefest outline of the building blocks of Quakerism, and then launches in to a more analytical view of the different branches of Quakerism and how they differ. For a beginner who is looking for the general sense of the religion, the central ideas and what they mean, this book is very confusing. It goes into some detail on specific meetings and movements that don't have much meaning for someone who knows very little about Quakerism. For the more advanced reader, however, the specific information is sure to be interesting. The focus on not putting any single label on the entire group of Friends is helpful and provides a lot of food for thought on what the essence of the Quaker tradition is, what defines a Quaker, what beliefs are the most important to the religion, and what direction the religion is taking, as well as more pragmatic issues such as if and how to boost the population of Friends. A newcomer to the ideas of Quaker faith is going to want to look at it in a much broader and looser sense. The specific nature of the book makes it more attractive to those who have deeper background knowledge. The range of topics covered in the book is both a blessing and a curse. It is good in that it provides a very comprehensive look at the religion, but also bad because on every topic there is so much difference of opinion that the overlying impression left after reading the book is more a sense of the divisiveness of the religion rather than specific knowledge about which branches of Quakers fall on which side of an issue. By covering so many different issues each one is given less attention and explained less thoroughly. Prominent issues such as leadership, identity, and sexuality are covered in only a few pages, which is not nearly enough to do them justice or even to completely explain why groups of Friends have different ideas on each issue. The result is that the reader is left with a jumbled sense of what he or she has just read, with the impression that it is so much diverse information condensed into such a small space that he or she has learned a little about a lot, but a lot about nothing. The good part about including so many topics is that it really drives home the idea that Quakers, in many ways more than other religions, cannot be simply defined and do not all agree on any single idea, even something as central to the tradition as the peace testimony. Reading about the differing viewpoints on each topic makes this idea very apparent. The Quakers in America gives enough diversity of opinion on a wide range of issues to be interesting and informative for the slightly more advanced reader of Quaker texts, but is too focused on the more political side of the religion to be very useful for a beginner. Someone with no or very limited knowledge of what Quakerism means would come away from this book with a stronger impression of how divided Friends in America are, without getting a strong enough sense of the foundations and basics of the religion to really understand how or why these divisions came about and what they mean. For someone who is more grounded in the basic aspects of the faith, this focus on division, why it happens, what it means, and if and how to stop it, is much more interesting and really forces thought on these issues. Overall it is a well-researched, honest, and unbiased view of Quakers in America today that leaves the reader with much to think about, both about Quakerism and religion in general.

This just a fantastic publication - seeing all the detail and layers of information on every topic, I'm really impressed. This is not just a must for anyone visiting Dublin but it also for anyone living there as it provides info on all kinds of hidden gems. The narrative is rich in anecdote and local lore, it's a comprehensive and truly compelling guide to the history of science, engineering and sheer human inventiveness in our capital city. I know I will be reading this for years to come!
