Our Daddy Is Invincible! is a beautiful, healing reminder for both children and parents that, no matter what life throws at you, the power of love and the unbreakable human spirit survives and thrives in all of us. Told through the eyes of military children who have watched a parent go to war and come home injured, this book reminds all that they are not alone and that even though daddy's or mommy's body may be altered, the human heart is truly invincible --Gary SiniseActor/National spokesperson for The American Veterans Disabled For Life Memorial FoundationAs a nurse who has worked for 25 years with people affected by traumatic injuries, I have come to learn how children of an injured parent often feel lost amid the chaos. With striking illustrations and inviting text, Our Daddy is Invincible! will help children and parents wade through the confusion together as they learn how to navigate the strange new world of hospitals, doctors, change and uncertainty. The underlying message? Though daddy may be different, daddy is still daddy. This book is sure to be a valued resource for the children of our brave warriors. --Anne Moessner, RN, MSN, Traumatic Brain Injury Clinical Nurse Specialist, Chair, Defense Health Board's TBI Family Caregiver PanelOur Daddy is Invincible! is a wonderful book told for children from a child s perspective. It fills a void in an important area: helping children deal with a parent returning wounded from combat. It shows how children can understand the difficult challenges that their mother or father now faces, and how they can learn not to be afraid and even how they can help. We have worked with many wounded service members, and we have seen countless times that helping their families is critical in ensuring their recovery. This book is a valuable tool in that important effort. --David A. About the Author

Shannon Maxwell, Author of Our Daddy Is Invincible!, is an active and respected advocate for wounded warriors and their families. She grew up in Texas. After graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University at the age of twenty, she married her college sweetheart, Tim Maxwell, and worked as a Junior Account Executive for the advertising agency, Hershey Communications in Irvine, California. She experienced the gravity of life as a Marine Corps spouse early in 1991 when her husband deployed in support of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Safely reunited, she began to look to career avenues, which she could transport to various military duty stations and make a difference. She worked as the business manager for a Child Psychiatrist and studied and taught self defense while raising her then two children. In 2000 she returned to school, earning a Masters of International Management from University of Maryland University College. She then lent her talents as a marketing consultant and volunteer to various civic and military related organizations. In 2004, when her husband, LtCol Tim Maxwell, USMC (ret), was wounded with a penetrating traumatic brain injury (TBI); her focus became furthering wounded warrior family initiatives. She currently serves as Vice President of SEMPERMAX Support Fund which she co-founded in 2009, having first co-founded the non-profit organization, Hope For The WarriorsTM in 2006 to address immediate and long-term needs of families recovering from traumatic injuries. In addition, Shannon sits on the Advisory Boards for Thomas Jerome House, Inc., a community home for service members with TBI, and the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program. As an appointed member of the Traumatic Brain Injury Family Caregiver Panel, established through the National Defense Authorization Act of 2007, Section 744, Shannon helped create training curriculum that would educate and assist Family Caregivers in understanding traumatic brain injury and participating actively in the care of their wounded family member. The curriculum was adopted by the Defense Health Board and approved for distribution on April 14, 2010. Shannon has been recognized for her efforts in support of the wounded with the Presidential Call to Service Award and became one of five recipients of the 2007 National Military Family Association s Very Important Patriot Award. Shannon and her husband, Tim, adopted their youngest daughter in 2008. They now reside with their family in Northern Virginia. Their work as advocates for wounded, ill, injured families is ongoing.

I bought a few of these along with Shannon Maxwell's other kids book Big Boss Brain to give to everyone I know who is dealing with a brain injured family member - whether war related, car accident, stroke or skiing accident etc. What I love about this book is that if you read it to kids you learn too. There are so many new terms to deal with that grandparents, siblings and kids might not understand. This explains it all. This is an easy read that is very helpful on explaining why brain injured people might act a certain way, what is occupational therapy etc. Well written and very much needed for so many families going through the ups and downs of this new lifestyle for their family.

Awesome book!! A blessing!!! Hard to explain information easily explained to kids!

It was well written and illustrated. It wasn't scary or upsetting to a child. I donated it to the library on Ft. Wainwright (Army base in Alaska).

A brother and a sister love their daddy and think of him as a superhero. This helps them to not worry about him when he deploys to far away lands to fight supervillains. But one day those villains manage to penetrate his defenses, and he comes home to fight a different battle, one of recovery. The siblings learn that they haven't lost their superdad. He and many other wounded warriors love their families with superhuman force and find amazing new adventures to fill this new chapter of their lives. Here is another one in honor of Veteran's Day coming up. This is a great book for kids coping with a parent who has been injured. It is definitely targeted at military children, but I think it would be helpful for any child whose parent's injury is sudden and life-changing. It is written by the wife of a wounded warrior, and there is a touching personal statement from one of her children at the beginning of the book. Even though this story is about one family's experience, it does a good job of creating a feeling of community and inclusion through the illustrations. My favorite, favorite part of this book is the end pages, with photographs and personal stories of real life families with parents dealing with disability. Nothing helps kids cope better than knowing that others are going through the same thing they are. The only caveat to my enthusiastic recommendation of this book would be that it is, in my opinion, for kids that are a little bit older. I don't feel that it would be as effective for kids under 6 or so.[...]

In the nine years of war since 9/11, much has been written (and rightly so) of the courage of our wounded Marines and soldiers. With 35,000+ returning burned, wounded, with multiple amputations, the military medical system was overwhelmed, and groups such as Fisher House and Wounded Warriors sprang to the forefront to assist. All well and good, but in the rush to assist these badly wounded warriors, there was unseen and unnoticed collateral damage - the children of these same wounded warriors.Fortunately, author Shannon Maxwell's fine book "Our Daddy is Invincible" addresses these issues, and in terms young children can understand. This brightly- illustrated children's book is directed at both the children of the wounded, as well as the children of those deployed. Dads and moms do get hurt, her pictures and age-appropriate text explain, but in the end, our family endures. "Daddy's been hurt", a mom tells her two young children, "but it will all be OK."To a wife suddenly dealing with wounded husband, she's calmly conveyed the situation to her children, and now can go back to learning the realities of medivac's, an emergency flight to Germany, rehab, and the multitude of care issues that will be arising. But the children lying in bed at night have their own fears, and it's to them that Maxwell address her book "daddies can be hurt?" they think, "how can that be? We didn't think it that way."Maxwell knows too well of what she writes; her Marine husband was badly wounded in Iraq in 2004, and she dropped their two children off with her sister as she made a mad dash to Germany to meet her husband at the hospital. "They sometimes get hurt, just like you and me," Maxwell explains," Even superheroes get hurt by the villain sometimes." She also takes time to explain how nurses, doctors, and an array of therapists are standing by to help amputee mom or blind dad.In a compassionate, but direct fashion, "Our Daddy is Invincible" deals with wounded dads and moms directly with illustrations of amputee dad or TBI dad. But it's the context that's so important, and here Maxwell and illustrator Liza Biggers make their point: amputee dad is happily swimming with his daughter, TBI dad (with helmet) is having breakfast with his young son, and wheelchair dad is on the sidelines of his daughter's soccer game and cheering her on. "Our daddy is the bravest man we know", one of Maxwell's characters writes, "we are so glad that he's here to see us grow."While one wishes that Maxwell and Biggers (who lost her brother in Iraq) did not have the personal experiences that made "Our Daddy is Invincible" such a powerful and effective book...thankfully they wrote it regardless. If my son (with 5 deployments) ever returns as amputee dad or blind dad, this is the book I'll be reading to his son / my grandson. A must-read for anyone with a deployed spouse and children at home.

A truly wonderful book. Well written and illustrated, it is absolutely age appropriate for young children trying to understand traumatic brain injury in their mother or father. It's message - that their parents have a whole group of people working to make them better, and that their parents love them no matter what - is timely and timeless. A must read for any family living with a survivor of traumatic brain injury.

Shannon Maxwell and Liza Biggers have delivered a sensitive and honest message to families of wounded soldiers in Our Daddy is Invincible! The colorful artwork and gentle words illustrate the invincible love among family members even during the most scary of times.Younger and older children will benefit from the beautiful message this book sends, as well as the parents who share in the reading.

A great book to explain trauma or mood changes in a parent to kids!
