This graphic novel adapts the classic children's story of a horse whose gentle nature triumphs over abuse and misfortune. Anna Sewell's original remains beloved to preteen girls in particular, not just for the adventures Black Beauty goes through, but also for Sewell's lyrical descriptions of a past era. Husband-and-wife team Brigman and Richardson do a wonderful job illustrating that period, with b&w drawings that pop off the page and give readers an excellent sense of place as well as time. Unfortunately hamstrung by having to shorten a story that spans many years, they have had to cut all of Sewell's descriptions and most of her transitions, leaving short, choppy chapters that represent information rather than tell a story. Sewell originally wrote the story to expose mistreatment of animals in her society, and the cuts leave the adaptation sounding a bit preachy and repetitive. The spirit of the author's brave horse still comes through, as Black Beauty describes his different masters and the other horses he meets in his life. Grade 4-6–This adaptation of the 19th-century classic is faithful to the original story, in which Black Beauty recounts his experiences with both kind and cruel owners. The novel's episodic structure translates easily to graphic format, but the frequent moral lessons and antiquated language may make some readers squirm. The artwork is detailed and realistic but lacks a distinctive style; the layout is similarly functional. Black Beauty's success even in libraries with a popular graphic-novel collection is not assured, since it is likely to become lost among the trendier manga titles. Graphic novels are the best books for dyslexic kids. My daughter wasn't really an avid reader until we discovered these. We have the original Black Beauty book but it seemed overwhelming for my daughter. Once we got the graphic novel, she had finished it in less than a week.

My niece does not like to read. Getting her to do her reading homework is a nightmare. She loves horses so I got her this book and she actually picked it up and started reading it without any prompting! She loves that's it's about horses and all the pictures too!

These kids are use to colorful illustrations. My daughter was not that into this one because it was black and white illustrations.

My daughter just finished Black Beauty in her class and love it. So I decided to surprise her with this book. I was very impressed with the length and thoroughness of this version. I was expecting it to be around 50 pages and it clocks in at 170+ pages. About 150 pages are dedicated to the story and 20 pages are dedicated to story boards. That bonus was most welcome also as my daughter loves to draw and seeing the story boards shows her the process.This graphic novel obviously doesn't contain 100% of what the book has in it but it is pretty close.

It is just the right kind of novel for children. Very nice story, easy to read.This was a gift for my 9 year old niece to read during the summer.I would recommend this to every child who doesn't feel like reading a traditional novel, turning page by page.This graphic novel gets more attention by providing the story in the pictures.

Bought for my neice for her birthday. She's only 7 so her reading level isn't quite up to reading the original book, so this was a great compromise that she can understand and appreciate.

The recommendation on this book is for readers too young to read the original book, but I think its wonderful for anyone of any age who loves this beautiful story.Its beautifully illustrated and the graphic novel format leaves out none of the spirit or depth of the original.A true pleasure to read.

For my 8 year old granddaughter, who also got the movie, and the full book this Christmas. All three, and the one she goes to first , and spends the most time on, is this one.
