The home of a family of five is now a crime scene: four of them savagely murdered, one—a sixteen-year-old girl—missing. Was she lucky to have escaped? Or is her absence evidence of something sinister? Detective D. D. Warren is on the case—but so is survivor-turned-avenger Flora Dane. Seeking different types of justice, they must make sense of the clues left behind by a young woman who, whether as victim or suspect, is silently pleading, Look for me.My Thoughts: A multi-layered story, Look for Me (D. D. Warren) takes the reader along on a journey to find a killer and a missing girl. Our narrators are D. D. Warren, a detective with the Boston P.D., and Flora Dane, the famously abducted woman held captive for 472 days…and who now has taken on a vigilante role. But she also helps other young women to protect themselves and move on.The three children in the Baez family spent time in foster care, during which they were abused by other teens in the home. By the time their mother got them back again, they were broken and damaged, but hoping for a better life. Nothing worked out the way they had planned, for they were thrust, once again, into the school where their enemies from care could keep torturing them.Who had killed the four members of a family? Why did the oldest girl, Roxanna, run? Did she have anything to do with the killings? Or had she somehow escaped, but would become the next target? Did the time in foster care have something to do with the killings? Was someone worried about possible charges being brought against the abusers in the home?I enjoyed trying to figure out who could have killed the family, and I liked how D. D.’s mind worked in trying to eliminate suspects and zero in on the perpetrator(s).Flora, whose first person narrative brought the reader into her mind and her thoughts, was interesting and likable, except to D. D., who mostly wished she didn’t have to keep her in line while she “helped.”Alternating with the other POVs was a journal kept by Roxanna, which helped the reader piece together her experiences while in foster care. And at the very heart of the story, was the unexpected perpetrator who seemed the least likely one. A riveting story that earned 5 stars for me.

I love Lisa Gardner so I wanted to love this book but I didn’t. I know her books can be grittier and darker than I like. Luckily this book was not from the perspective of the truly depraved UNSUB that she can write so well (too well for me). I’ve also never been a huge fan of D.D. and much prefer her other protagonists. I prefer her police character trying to solve an interesting case. This book should have had that in the case of a sole survivor to a mass shooting that took out an entire family but it wasn’t. I couldn’t find Roxy compelling enough to carry this story. The story is sad and tragic and involves far too much harm to children for my tastes. It’s a slow moving story that was not her best work. If you are new to Gardner don’t start here. D.D. and Flora both have lengthy back stories from other novels that are worth reading (and better) before starting this one.

I have read all of her novels and loved the page turning, dark and twisted stories she usually produces with extensive research and precise writing style. However, this book was just an average mystery novel. I put it down several times wondering when it would turn into the page turning thriller I am accustomed to when reading her books. It is about a family that is torn apart by an alcoholic mother and put in an awful foster care program. Flora Dane as a CI to D.D. Warren just seems implausible, although I do like Flora. Not her best work with a predictable ending.

I usually enjoy this author. But not this time... I solved the case early on and wondered how DD and Flora could miss so much that seemed very obvious. DD police work was sloppy. Roxy wasn't strong enough to carry the story and I skipped a lot of her narrative. It was long and often felt like filler. The writing is decent -as it should be for an experienced author but the story misses on many levels. I finished the book in a haphazard way but I would not recommend it.

If I could rate a book higher than a 5, then this would be at least a 10! Lisa Gardner’s latest book in her D.D. Warren series is not just a mystery/thriller. It is also a social commentary on so many issues. Roxie Baez has a dysfunctional family, and the whole book is centered around her and her life. When her family is found murdered, at least everyone except her, she is the number one suspect. LOOK FOR ME becomes a cat and mouse game between Detective D.D. Warren, with quirky survivor Flora Dane thrown in as a confidential informant. The social commentary is fascinating and worked into the story so well that you want to keep reading to find out what happens to Roxie and the many ways the system has failed her. First her mom failed her, then the judicial and foster system failed her, and even her school was not a place of safety for her. So, where does a young girl find help when she is desperate. Enter another character who seems to be on the autism spectrum, but Mike Davis is her only friend in foster care, the one who warns her and tries to watch out for her. The author does an outstanding job of presenting the case against bullying by having two of the main characters, Roberto and Anya be so evil to Roxy from the time she first enters the foster care system. I was enthralled by the mystery as much as by the social commentary. The whole book has an “if only” kind of aura about it. But in the book, as in life, there are no “if only’s”. There is only the reality that is heart-breaking and eye-opening at the same time. Read the book for the mystery; remember the book for the lessons you can take away from it.DisclaimerDisclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.
